About Sojourner

Sojourner

Hi, we live and work in Afghanistan, running a region for the NGO 'Serve Afghanistan'. We've settled in a small town in the North that makes it relatively easy to do development projects in the rural communities beyond our town. I'm married and live here with my wife and three daughters. my wife homeschools the girls. We're Dutch nationals. We count it a privilege (and a challenge) to be part of the local community here, build bridges (figuratively), and to serve the people with quality development initiatives. Our focus is on community ownership, sustainability and capacity building. This year we're involved in a comprehensive water & sanitation project as well as a livelihood diversification initiative.
As private life, work and community are so closely intertwined here, I thought it would be good to have a hobby to distract myself, and I chose photography. I'm visually oriented and taking pictures helps me to observe life in Afghanistan and to keep an interest in all its diverse expressions, without it becoming too dreary (which would be possible - I don't want to over-romanticise the way it is here).

Photography Equipment

Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Tamron 18-250mm (it's best not to change lenses here too often because of the dust, so I bought this Tamron and am really happy with it - does it all and good enough!)
Software: Adobe Lightroom and sometimes just iPhoto
